The Proceedings of the 1st Southern Hemisphere International Rock Mechanics Symposium features 104 papers that were presented at SHIRMS held in Perth, Western Australia, 16-19 September 2008. The proceedings have been split into two volumes. Volume One covers mining and civil rock mechanics, while Volume Two covers fundamental and petroleum rock mechanics.

SHIRMS is a new initiative and its success is the result of an active involvement and outstanding contribution from a worldwide authorship.
