The seminar discussed techniques and procedures that can help a mining operation reduce water consumption and minimise the impacts of mining on ground and surface water resources. Issues such as stormwater management, basic hydrology, pit lake management, use of constructed wetlands, acid drainage, seepage monitoring, dewatering, and the incorporation of uncertainty in predicting water demand were covered.

Special emphasis was placed on the discussion of decommissioning issues which are of increasing importance to mine site personnel. Workshop sessions were incorporated into the course. As specific case studies often avoid the "problems" encountered, the workshops were a forum for discussing the practical issues involved in managing a tailings facility.

The workshop program was designed to provide a sound understanding of mineral slurry and tailings rheology and question operating issues. The agenda included:

  • Rheology associated with thickening, pumping and storage discharge

The workshop was in high demand and was of particular interest to operators, researchers, superintendents and engineers responsible for the design, selection, operation and maintenance of mineral processing, slurry handling and tailings operations.

The 2003 International Seminar on Paste and Thickened Tailings provided an insight into the important worldwide technological advances in the safe and environmentally sound disposal of tailings as well as the latest developments in this field. Two of the case studies presented explored the challenges being addressed in the commissioning of new high capacity thickened tailings plants for above ground deposition. The course consisted of case studies, specialist presentations and discussion sessions. It was structured around a number of case studies to address the conditions and challenges encountered in day-to-day mining, and innovative solutions utilised in different mining operations and environments.

An introduction to thickened and paste tailings was included, a technique being considered increasingly as a means of expediting rehabilitation and mine closure activities.

Paste Technology 2000 was developed to address the issues of thickening, transporting and disposing of tailings for both surface disposal and underground backfill purposes. Peripheral, but vitally important issues such as the cost of tailings disposal, were also addressed in order that a comparison of the whole of life cost of conventional versus thickened tailings disposal could be made.

In simple terms, Paste Technology 2000 provided the opportunity to be informed of issues such as;

  • The technology involved in thickened tailings (thickeners, flocculants etc.)
  • The advantages and disadvantages of using thickened tailings for above ground disposal or underground mine backfill
  • The potential return on investment in the technology
