ACG Principal - Environmental Geomechanics

The ACG, University of Western Australia invites expressions of interest for the position of ACG Principal - Environmental Geomechanics (Professorial Fellow). This appointment is a full time position based at the ACG, University of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia.

This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of Australian mining research projects in environmental geomechanics, mine backfill, paste and thickened tailings, soil mechanics, mine closure and rehabilitation, and tailings management and decommissioning. The appointee is expected to collaborate with industry, private consulting firms, universities and other research organisations. The successful applicant is to initiate, develop and lead environmental geomechanics international mining symposiums and events, training products, and publications. He/she is expected to have a PhD in geomechanics or equivalent, an extensive publication list in environmental geomechanics, and a proven track record for attracting funding for research.

Postgraduate studentships in the field of mine seismicity and rockbursts

Excellent research projects in mining geomechanics, in particular mine seismicity are currently being offered at Masters and PhD levels. Previous students have been involved in practical applied research and enjoyed the opportunity to attend conferences and collect data in Canada and South Africa.

Postgraduate studentships in the field of mining backfill

The ACG, in collaboration with the School of Civil & Resource Engineering at The University of Western Australia, has secured industry sponsorship for a research programme on the geomechanics of underground backfilling. The project will focus on the application of effective stress theory to minimise the geotechnical risks associated with backfilling procedures, and the optimisation of the backfilling process in order to reduce costs. It will require laboratory testing (including the use of a geotechnical centrifuge), numerical modelling and some field work.

Entitlements include a tax-free stipend of A$35,000 for up to 3.5 years, as well as all travel, computer and study materials.

The position will suit a civil, resource or mining engineering graduate. The research project is in a completely new field within the mining industry and will provide successful candidates with a niche qualification in a rapidly expanding field. The research proramme will include collaboration with researchers in Canada and there may be opportunities for exchange visits.
